Arun Valley, the world’s deepest valley is located between the majestic Mount Everest and Mount Makalu. Arun valley trek offers a view of stunning Himalayan scenery. Mt. Everest, Mt. Baruntse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Thamserku, and Mt. Amadablam are visible from Arun Valley. Over 80 species of butterflies and 650 species of birds reside here. It’s also the home to the rare Panda. Flowers like Orchids can be spotted along the faint jungle trail.
Makalu-Arun valley is a sacred place that is blessed with unbelievable natural beauty and customs. Walking through the picture-perfect Sherpa Village is the major attraction of the trek. The ethnic groups of Sherpa, Limbu, and, Rai inhabit this area.
The trek demands a level of stamina and physical fitness. To completely value the perfection of the region, one needs to be in sound health. Trekking for 5 to 6 hours every day isn’t easy. Also, there is a chance of being affected by altitude sickness. Trek to Arun Valley is doable in any season. But our experts recommend autumn and spring as a good time.
The journey to Arun Valley begins from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. After some sightseeing in the capital, one moves towards the East with a direct flight to Tumlingtar. Some people also drive to Biratnagar and then begin the trek via Hille. From Tumlingtar, we trek to Chyawabesi, Gothe Bazaar, Dhobane, Phedi, and Gurase. After a week, we reach Bung. Then, we move forward to Surke la, Gaikharka and Pangum. From Puiyan, we join the classic Base Camp route. We walk down to Namche Bazaar and then to Lukla. A flight from Lukla to Kathmandu brings the end to our journey.
Today, we will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. After receiving you at the airport, we transfer you to the hotel. After you settle in and freshen up, you can stroll around the place. Then, we will discuss the trip. We brief you about the equipment that is necessary for the trek and get all the information for the trekking permits. In the evening, you will be introduced to the trekking guide. Together, we will enjoy a welcome dinner. Then, you can enjoy the nightlife in the Thamel area or just enjoy your time in the hotel.
After breakfast in the morning, we start the sightseeing tour of Nepal’s capital. In the morning, we will visit Swayambhunath stupa. This is said to be 2000 years old Buddhist Stupa that peacefully sits at the top of a hill. The main area has a solid brick hemisphere, lofty conical spire and is crowned by Copper gilt. From the top, you can see the entire Kathmandu valley below your feet. Then, we will drive to the Pashupatinath Temple. This is an important temple of Lord Shiva with huge premises. Hindus from different parts of the world travel to Pashupatinath to get the blessing of Lord Shiva. After exploring the area, we will drive to Bouddhanath. This is another stunning Buddhist monument of Nepal-the biggest one. The place is decorated with lights, colourful prayer flags, and rotating wheels. Finally, we will drive to the city of Patan to explore Patan Durbar Square. Located about 5 km from Kathmandu, this is one of the three royal cities in the valley. Patan, the centre of fine arts, is filled with stone and wood carvings, ornate architecture, and metal statues. Here, we will visit the palace complex and a beautiful museum. After the sightseeing tour, we will get back to the hotel. You can complete the preparation for the trek with necessary shopping and packing. Thamel is a great place to buy or rent trekking gear. Tumlingtar is a tiny city in the east of Nepal. In the early morning, we will take a plane to Tumlingtar. Located within the twisting Sabha and Arun River in Koshi zone, Tumlingtar is also one of the biggest Tar. The flight of about an hour offers a beautiful scene of high hills and mountains. After an adventurous journey, we will arrange our bags and then head for the trek. From there, we trek uphill to the villages and the green meadows. We walk closer to the lofty hills and high mountains. The view will revitalise you throughout the trek. After a couple of hours into the trek, we reach Chyawabesi. On reaching here, we will stop for the night in a local guesthouse. Overnight in Chyawabesi
Initially, we walk through the agriculture fields for about 30 minutes. Then, we cross a rusty metal bridge. Walking on the bank of the Arun Koshi, we roll into the village of Balawa Besi. The trail climbs into sal trees just above to the village-like Bharta and Nepali Danda. And then we cross the ridge. Witnessing the first glimpse of Arun Valley, we steadily rise along the cascade of terraces field. Here, we pass the Marduwa village at 1500m. Gradually, we walk down the whitewashed town called the Chalise Nepali Danda. The trail climbs on the northern bank of the Irkhuwa Khola. A further walk along the banana plantations takes you to the Gothe Bazaar. This is where we spend your night. We sleep in the mouth of Benkhuwa Khola. Overnight in Gothe Bazaar
Early in the morning, we begin our trek to Dhobane. Continuing through the path of rice terrains, we shall cross the river on a wooden bridge. Here, we can observe the production of Nepali paper. The paper is made from the plant called Lokta. There are many places on the path where you can dip in the river. Since the temperature is tropical, the water is not icy. Continue uphill walk along the village of Rai and Sherpa brings you to the large suspension bridges. After passing the Irkhuwa Khola, you reach Dhobane. We crash in a tea house for the night. As we pass through the stunning village of Tallo Phedi, we stop for a while. We enjoy the view of tidy slate-roofed houses that cut inside and outside of the forest. The trail takes you up the terraces lands that seem impossibly green. It passes through multiple damp patches of the jungle as they follow the South bank. The trail gives beautiful views of the valley and the mountains. You cross the river on a bamboo bridge and take the trail over Sanu Khola to Phedi. The overall trek takes not less than 5 to 6 hours. Once you freshen up in the tea house, you can visit the nearby Stupa and a disused Gompa. Overnight in Phedi
We begin the day with a delicious breakfast. The perilously steep ascent from Phedi takes us to the river. We start to ascend from the spur that divides Sanu Khola and Irkhuwa Khola. Another 100m ascend from Jaubire takes you to the sprawling village named as Thulo Fokte. After some hours of walk, we stop for lunch and some rest. Then, you cross a path with stone stairs. It’s a slow ascent along the forest. Further climbing, you’ll have stunning views of the plunging valley. The path takes you down to Bilbate. After 30 minutes of the walk, you reach the tiny stone village of Gurase. Overnight in Gurase
The day starts with breakfast in Gurase. Today, we pass along the forest of Rhododendron and village dotted with beautiful Mani walls and Stupas. About 2 hrs of the walk takes us to the place called Salpa Pokhari. This is a wish-fulfilling sacred pool located at the altitude of 3,414m. The forests of Hemlock and fir surround the region. It abounds different birds and wildlife. In winter, the path is all covered with snow. You walk across the forest to witness the distant peak of Solu Khumbu. After getting on an open area of loose stones above Salpa Bhanjyang, you go for a steep drop on the mainstream. Moving on, the trail goes across a hillside to Sanam. Overnight in Sanam
The initial part of today’s trek is gentle. Then we take a slow walk through rhododendron, oaks, Chir, and pines forest. After an hour of walking, we reach the place called Share. We can witness a paper factory and an old Gompa in the village. We also pass an enormous rock that has been carved with mantras. A couple of hours from Share takes us to the forested valley of Gudel. At 1900m, there is another beautiful Rai village of whitewashed houses. Then, we cross the Hongu Khola over a steel suspension bridge of about 1,320m. After crossing a river, the major trail drops below the village of the fields of rice, soybean, and millet terraces. Then you reach the village of Bung. This is a point where we will be paying the Makalu National Park entry fee. Overnight in Bung
As you walk above the hillside, you’ll witness the farmland getting more vibrant and varied. You might see the racks of maize, beans and other crops left to dry on the wooden balconies. Continuing on the trail, you can enjoy the glorious views of fertile Hongu Valley. After crossing the hillside, you come across a village. The upper side of the valley has a perfect circle made of tall juniper trees mark. Here you can see Khiraule Gompa. Also, you get to witness some soaring views of the surrounding valley. You then walk through the scrubby and burnt forest to the bright hillside. After you pass the valley of Charakot, a steep stairway drops to Surke La Pass. Overnight in Surke La Pass
Today the path descends onwards from a notch. Here, the slopes are all covered with wispy thickets of bamboo. Initially, we pass the village of Najindingma village. Here, the views of the grassland area are clear. People from the surrounding valley get come for summer grazing. Another hour in a soggy forest takes us to Gaikharka. Here, one gets the stunning views of the grassy terraces and the scattered farmhouses. Overnight in Gaikharka
After breakfast in Gaikharka, the trek commences. Initially, you cross a humid, and ferny forest as the trail continues to Hinku Khola. We cross the river on a 62m-long steel bridge. On the path, we will witness two sparkling waterfalls. Then it’s time to accomplish the vertical ascent to the Sibuje Valley at 2,500m. The ascent takes about 2 hrs. As we climb further, we can witness a pocket Gompa. We climb for another hour to reach Pangum La pass. From the top, we get the grand views of the Khumbu Himalaya and Mera Peak at 6,476m. We will climb to Pangum Gompa to stay for the night. Overnight in Pangum
Crossing the ultimate pass of the Arun Valley, we trek downhill and then to Kari La(3,145m). Here, we can get an awesome glimpse of the mountain peaks. After lunch, the trail is mostly downhill. After a steeply downhill walk, the path to Arun Valley joins the one from Jiri. From here, we will continue to Puiyan. The never-ending terrain can sometimes be frustrating, but the view of the valley is interesting. Puiyan, a beautiful village offers the view of Dudh Koshi. Overnight in Puiyan
This is also an important day of our trek. After breakfast in the morning, we start our sturdy trek to the village of Phakding. Today, we will join the classic Everest Base Camp trek. You can explore the Arun Valley and enjoy the classic Base Camp journey in a single trek. About four to five hours of the trek takes us to this small Sherpa settlement. The village of Phakding has been build against the tall mountains. Here, you can explore the unique Sherpa culture and their lifestyle. Overnight in Phakding
From Phakding, we will head towards Namche Bazaar. It’s the day to reach the beautiful village of the Khumbu region. On the way to Namche, we get to the cross the Dudhkoshi River multiple times. We walk across a thrilling suspension bridge that is mostly covered with colourful prayer flags. Then we continue to climb towards the village of Jorsale. A two and a half-hour of the walk take us to Namche. If on a clear day, the hypnotic view of Mount Everest welcomes you the region. At Jorsale, we enter Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you’ll find much unique flora and fauna. Here, you need to verify your permits from the government personnel. After 5 to 6 hours of hike, we’ll reach Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is the economic hub of the area and it is also the gateway to Everest. Overnight in Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazar is quite a great place to explore. In the morning, we can enjoy a stunning view of mountain vistas from the hotel. OR, we can climb a nearby hill in the morning to witness the awesome sunrise. In the day, we can go for a short hike to Thame. Here, we can spend some time in the Everest view hotel. You can visit a monastery where you can see a giant skull of a mythical creature called “Yeti”. Namche also has some great bakery where you can enjoy the finest bake. On a clear day, you can witness a breathtaking view of peaks including Everest, AmaDablam Lhotse, AmaDablam and others. Overnight in Namche Bazaar
Today is an easy walk downhill from Namche. On this day, we take our time to explore the beauty of exotic Sagarmatha National Park. We walk along the path of Rhododendron and Oak to the River of Dudh Koshi. On the path, we cross a suspension bridge and multiple human settlements. If we are lucky, we might spot some wild animals in the way. For the night, we stop at Lukla. This is the last tea house we will be living in. Following day, we will bid a final goodbye to the Khumbu. Overnight to Lukla
In the morning, we bid our goodbye to the porters. Enjoy your last glimpse of Mount Everest and other nearby peaks. In an early morning flight, we return to the hustle of Kathmandu. The flight of about 45 minutes is full of beautiful sceneries. From the Airport, we will return to the hotel. After checking in the hotel, you can have some rest. You can stroll around the streets of Thamel and do some shopping. Thamel has man great collection of classic arts and crafts. You can buy some souvenirs as a gift to yourself and your loved ones. In the evening, we will enjoy the farewell dinner together. We will talk about the awesome journey we accomplished as a team. Overnight in Kathmandu
Today is your last day in Kathmandu. You might have some hours for shopping or sightseeing. As per your flight time, you can check out from the hotel. Our representative from the hotel will drop you to the International airport-three hours before the flight schedule. Waving a last goodbye to Kathmandu, you can go home with amazing memories.
